Do you see the significance of this? To be a disciple of someone or something, you have to leave something behind. It is not enough to say I will follow Jesus. You must leave the old life and pursue the new.
Philippians 3:7-8 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.
Here are the facts of the matter.
1. A disciple has given up anything that distracts from the one he follows.
2. He willingly gives up the old life for the new one in Christ.
3. He realizes that what he gave up is small compared to what he has gained.
If I were to say to you, “if you give me $100.00, I will immediately give you $1,000.00,” you would probably make that trade because you know that $1,000.00 is far more valuable than the $100.00.
Jesus is asking us to trade for something far more valuable then we have.
We give up:
confusion for His peace, discouragement for Joy, sin for forgiveness, contentment for worry.
You see, what we give up to be His disciple, He replaces with something far better.
Today, why not agree with Him to be one of His real disciples. You will be so glad you did. Will it be easy, no! Will you have an easy life, no! You will have a fulfilled life that God uses to change eternity for others.
Prayer: Father, today I want to give my life completely to be a disciple of Jesus. I realize what I am saying and ask that You give me the strength that I will need to glorify Your Son. I love you and I am so grateful that you took me into Your family. I pray in Jesus name, amen.
Verse for today:
Luke 9:24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
