The Love Of God
“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
– I John 4:7-10
How often do you hear “God is love”? It seems that every one will say that phrase today. Do we really understand what love is? Have we gotten a hold on the reality of God’s perfect love? We seem to justify our sin by saying “God loves me…He understands”. Is that really what God’s love is all about?
Let us look at how John defines what the love of God is:
Love is of God and every one that loveth is born of God. Jesus said in John chapter 3 “ye must be born again”. So could it be that only the saved of God knows what the love of God is? All saved people were saved because of the love God has shown on them. God so loved the world…more than just mere words…a gift…a choice…not our choice…but HIS choice! God did not have to pay for our sin! He CHOSE to pay for our sin! Love is not an emotion that comes and goes as we use the word today. It is a choice we willingly make. We say “I fell in love” or “I fell out of love”. What an awful thought! Love is only an emotion…God could “fall out of love” with us! Not possible! If we are saved, we know God, and through this knowledge, we know that Jesus will never leave us nor forsake us. God will not leave us even on the days we are “unlovable”! God CHOSE to love us! He chose to love us in our sinful state and gave his only begotten Son to pay the price for our sin. If love is based on an emotional reaction…then God would have had no reason at all to love us! We were and are undesirable before a God that is holy, righteous, just, and perfect!
Someone once said to me “If God is love, how could He send people to Hell?” Truth is God sends no one to Hell. Instead He gives a way out of Hell because He loves us! We think we deserve love…that we have a “right” to God’s Heaven. In fact we deserve Hell…but God commendeth his love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8). Do you know the true love Christ has given to you freely? Are you thinking that you are OK and everything will be fine because you “love” God? Jesus gave His life because He loved you…what are you willing to give?
